Standing out in the Crowd

THE AZURE in Mt Hawthorn is a resort-style Mediterranean-cum Asian fusion restaurant with luxurious style and first-class menu to match.

Comfy lounges spill onto the street inviting you to walk into the light spacious restaurant, with splashes of turquoise and dark stylish furniture catching the eye.

Passionate chef and owner Christian Fogliani has a world of experience in top European and Asian resorts. His desire is to present top quality Mediterranean food with an Australian influence and the direction to have the first Green Globe certification in WA - meaning everything will be eco friendly and organic.

Every detail of the Azure screams quality from the blue Finnish glasses to the Sri Lankan linen, and of course the food lives up to Christian's high standards.

We started with Tempura Prawns and Semolina Scallops. The tiger prawns, encased in crunchy angel hair filo strips were firm and juicy and the tangy wasabi and lime mayonnaise made a perfect match.

The Semolina and Coriander Seed Dusted Scallops were large with a beautiful seared flavour and perfect texture. The Julienne vegetables were delightfully crunchy and fresh with a superb vinaigrette coating. The Flame Tree Sauvignon Blanc was pale, crisp and dry and a perfect accompaniment to this seafood dish (my colleague's favourite experience of the meal).

It was difficult to beat the entrée, but the Salmon with Poppy seed and Pistachio crust was divine and surprisingly the nuts did not overpower the generous piece of fish, cooked slightly rare. A squeeze of limejuice made this dish hard to beat with the fresh, sweet salad containing shaved pear with an overtone of poppy seeds. The Wells Domain Semillon Sauvignon Blanc was lemony and fruity in flavour, making a delicious pairing with the salmon.

My friend had the Pan Roasted Mt Barker Duck served on apple and cider salsa in tender rare fillets. The potato confit was probably the best I have ever tasted. The cubes were a perfect texture and with the dressing having just the right amount of thyme it sent me into raptures - oh the joys of simple foods. The parsnip and winter pea puree was smooth and a lovely green colour. The wine, an Mt Trio Pinot Noir was rich yet light and dry enough to bring out the flavour of the meat.

Being a "sweets person" I was blown away by the most exotic looking Black Forest Dome, which was served on a long white platter in a fine, hand-made dark chocolate cup. The dome was filled with a creamy, cherry concoction and along the plate three fresh raspberries highlighted by bright fruit coulis. A gorgeous, colour filled presentation fit for a queen.

I'd rate Azure in my top ten restaurants in Perth. It caters for all age groups and families, is fully licensed and it is a fantastic place for lunch or dinner any time of year. I agree with Christian, when he says the Azure "stands out from the crowd!"
