SCRUMPTIOUS FARE IN WEST PERTH

Smack in the middle of bustling West Perth, opposite Flight Centre and the Food Court, Coast Café is perfectly placed to catch the attention of the many tourists and other visitors arriving every ten minutes or so at the bus stop right outside, as well as the West Perth office workers on their lunch breaks. It's a great place to sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the world go by.

Coast Café has been operating for about four or five years, and was recently taken over by Vin Nguyentruc, Tristan Farmer and Andrew Hollet. They have plans to polish the floorboards and add wine racks, but otherwise the décor will remain basically unchanged - they quite like the cozy, old English look. Vin said he would prefer to put money into quality food rather than fancy décor.

Coast Café is open from 7am till 4:30pm Monday to Friday, serving breakfast, lunch and great coffee - a custom blend from Bonissimo - all day long. They just recently received a wine licence, and serve a variety of Western Australian wines.

Prices are reasonable, for example, the cooked breakfast is only $9.50. Coast Café is deservedly famous for its Steak Sandwich. This hugely popular dish is a substantial double-decker - toast, supremely tender steak, fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions, more toast, a second layer of tender steak, more fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions, and a final slice of toast. It comes accompanied by a bowl of shoestring fries with a dollop of aioli on top.

There is always a Soup of the Day and Chef's Specials of the Day, and Chef Brett Constance certainly knows his stuff. Being in an area like West Perth, Coast Café also caters for corporate clients.

We started with the delicious Bruschetta - two thick slices of crunchy toasted bread, each topped with fresh tomato, onions, mushrooms, herbs and a long strip of feta cheese, lightly grilled and drizzled with balsamic dressing.

For our main course, the Coast Snapper was a great choice. The snapper fillets with lemon and dill were grilled to perfection and served on top of a large potato rosti (grated potato shaped into a cake and grilled), topped with fresh asparagus spears, which had been coated with a parmesan crumb-mix and lightly grilled, and a chilli and lime aioli. The asparagus with the parmesan crumb coating was an unusually delicious touch and the snapper was excellent.

The service is very friendly, the food is top quality, and terrific value for money. It is refreshing to find a place where you can enjoy a great meal without breaking the bank, and I'm sure I'll be looking for an excuse to visit West Perth again for a scrumptious lunch at the Coast Café.
