Hospitality Industry launches TASTE program to combat skills shortage

Taste is a dining experience, where we invite students from years 9 through 12 into the dining rooms of some of the finest restaurants in Perth.

We take a small group of these students, provide a fabulous three course meal in a setting that they possibly may never have experienced, and we talk to them about what our experience has been in our profession.

We have question and answer sessions, and one of our apprentices; someone early on their path to a cooking career; talks to them about why they entered the trade, and how they are finding their chosen career.

Students that are inspired to take up a career in one of the food trades are asked to sign up to the School Apprenticeship link program.

This is a remarkable opportunity for students to be introduced to the Trades of Cooking, Baking and Pastry Cooking. Dining at some of Perth 's leading restaurants, students hear career advice and information from eight leading chefs who initiated and are supporting the TASTE program. These high profile role models are Russell Blaikie: Must Wine Bar, Kate Lamont: Lamont's East Perth , Neal Jackson: Jackson 's Restaurant, Peter Manifis: Vine leaves, Erwin Schick: Burswood Entertainment Complex, Kingsley Sullivan: New Norcia Café and Bakery, Chris Taylor: Fraser's Restaurant and Andrew Thomas: Sheraton Hotel.

These people are the cream of the crop in Perth 's food and hospitality industry. They are industry leaders and highly regarded by their peers. They are successful, so they are in the best position to tell the story of their experiences, what motivates them and the stories that have set them on that path to where they are today. That can motivate young people to want to be like them, who want to enjoy similar experiences, and, hopefully similar levels of achievement.
