Best Bangers & Mash in Subi

Contemporary Australian Pub grub with its origins firmly based on traditional British & Irish fare is what you will find at Paddy Maguires in Subiaco. The venue offers a wide range of imported beers and stouts, and wines from Western Australia , South Australia & New Zealand, and the kitchen serves up hearty, affordable meals of good quality, simple food. Holding true to the Irish theme, the humble potato features in most of the dishes - either as chips or mash. Damian, the sous chef, says they use local produce wherever possible. As well as the usual fish & chips, pasta, chicken or steak, you can try a traditional Beef & Guinness Pie or a plate of Bangers & Mash.

The kitchen is open for lunch and dinner, from 12 noon till 9pm , and up till 10pm on Fridays. There are ever-changing weekly specials, and the venue offers entertainment most nights of the week - from Quiz nights on Mondays, to Karaoke on Wednesdays, a solo entertainer on Thursdays and bands on Fridays and Saturdays. They have a regular crowd of faithful patrons as well as servicing the football crowd when there's a game on at Subiaco oval.

We sampled a few of the chef's favourite dishes - naturally we had to try the Pie: diced beef braised in Guinness with carrots, potatoes and mushrooms, topped with a puff pastry lid, and served with salad and golden chips - it was scrumptious, paired with a Guinness, of course. After much discussion, we came to the conclusion that ladies would probably cut up the pastry with knife and fork, while blokes would probably just pick it up and dunk it into the gravy.

Next came the Bangers & Mash: succulent pork sausages splayed over a mound of creamy mashed potato, covered with onion gravy and sprinkled with smoky paprika. This was definitely my favourite dish of the day, and Scott was very taken with it as well. Scott said it was perfectly matched with his James Squire Gold beer - a very aromatic drop. I quite enjoyed it with my glass of Devils Lair Fifth Leg white wine from Margaret River.

The last dish we tried was the classic Surf & Turf: a huge steak draped over generous chunks of polenta, covered with prawns and garlic sauce, and served with fresh salad. By this time we really didn't have enough room left to do it justice, but the prawns and sauce were truly delicious, and the servings very generous.

Overall, I would have to say that Paddy Maguires is a great place to go for a hearty meal that wont break the bank - and you won't have to wait ages for it to arrive. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the place has a homey, relaxed atmosphere. You can dine inside in booths, or sitting at the bar, or sit outside, in gracious comfort, around tables dotted along the shady, covered verandah, enjoying the fresh air. Oh! - and I highly recommend the Bangers & Mash!
