The Truly Asian Kitchen. There are plenty of restaurants that serve Asian dishes, but only a few where you can experience a truly traditional, straight-from-Asia meal, with all the styles and trimmings of the culture the food originated from. D'Malaysia, located in the heart of Northbridge, is one place in Perth where you can eat and feel like you're truly in Malaysia. D'Malaysia re-opened its doors in August, after six months of being closed for repairs and renovations due to a fire. It's now completely refurbished and ready to deliver an authentic Malaysian experience. Under the expert eye of manager Vijayendran M Radakrishna, D'Malaysia offers a fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai and European influences, reflecting the mixture of cultures present in the beautiful country. D'Malaysia's chefs have cooked for such dignitaries as the Sultan of Brunei and most of the ministers of the Malaysian Government. Despite these high credentials, the prices are very reasonable and the food is good value for money. The menu covers all the traditional bases - rice, noodles, satay, curries, lots of spicy coconut-based sauces, chicken, beef, lamb and seafood. There is something there to suit everyone's taste, from the milder dishes such as Sup Ekor (oxtail soup - tender chunks of oxtail in a very mildly spiced broth) through to Rendang Daging Padang (very spicy beef with coconut-based sauce). However, it's the truly authentic meals that D'Malaysia is known for. A true taste of the various Malaysian cultures can be experienced through dishes such as Nasi Lemak (coconut steamed rice with sambal, egg, cucumber, anchovies and crispy fried chicken) or Kangkong Goreng Belacan (malay watercress stir-fried with chilli and shrimp paste), Murthabak Pekan Rabu (special pastry filled with egg, minced chicken or beef, and onion, served with dalcha - a mildly spiced lentil based sauce) and traditional desserts like Bubur Kacang (soft mung beans in a sweet, creamy coconut milk sauce). Most people will choose a selection of different dishes and share them. This is a great way to try a wide variety of flavours and get the true Malaysian experience. In a refreshing change from the norm, D'Malaysia serves only non-alcoholic drinks. As well as the usual tea, coffee, soft drinks, juices and iced teas, you can wash down your meal with a traditional Malaysian drink such as Syrup Bandung Selasih (a sweet, bright pink concoction of rose syrup mixed with milk and speckled with basil seeds), or Teh Tarik (a hot drink made from black tea mixed with sweetened condensed milk, poured from a height to make it frothy and foamy into a large glass mug). Combine the food, drinks, décor, music, furnishings and tableware of this great restaurant and what you get is a true taste of Malaysia - something different that is definitely not to be missed. |
